Units

A value can say what it measures by writing a unit after its number, like 12 cm, 230 V or 9.81 m/s^2. Write a unit by its symbol or any other way listed here. Symbols match case exactly, so mm and Mm differ; names match in any case. Units compose with ·, * and / and powers, like kg·m/s², and to converts a value to another unit that measures the same thing, like length to cm.

Write a unit’s power after it, as in m2, m² or m^2. Areas and volumes can also be written in words, like sq ft, square metres, cu ft and cubic inches.

Write k straight after a number for thousands, like 50k or £2.5k. It isn’t a unit, so 50K is still kelvin and 50km still kilometres.

Calendar units

A month isn’t a fixed number of days, so calendar units convert only into each other, never into a duration such as d. Adding one to a date moves it by whole months, as in start + 6 month, to the same day of the month, or the last day of a shorter one.

Each currency measures something of its own, so amounts in different currencies never add up: to converts between them at an exchange rate, like price to USD.
